C'era una volta, una casa dal soffitto di stelle, costruita con arte divina in una rupe del monte Cillene, su cui, un bel giorno sorridente, apparve una bellissima aurora di color verde smeraldo.

Once upon a time, a divine craftsman built a house with a ceiling full of stars, right on top of the cliffs of Mount Cillene.
Il était une fois une maison de la voute étoilée, construite avec un art divin dans un rocher du mont Cillene et sur lequel apparut, un beau jour souriant, une belle aurore de couleur émeraude verte.

In quel giorno, in quel momento, nacque il paffutello Ermes,
con guance rosee come pesche, un bel ricciolo biondo sulla fronte
e due occhietti vispi vispi. Ermes era un bimbo importante: suo papà era il padre di tutti gli dei, il famoso Zeus,
mentre sua madre era Maia, la più bella tra le ninfe.

Tra tutti i bimbi nati, Ermes era senza ombra di dubbio il più ingegnoso e allo stesso tempo il più dispettoso di tutti. Infatti, la stessa mattina in cui venne al mondo, non appena suo padre e sua madre si addormentarono, lui balzò fuori dalla sacra culla
e varcò la soglia dell'antro dalla volta sublime,
alla ricerca di qualche sventurato da giocare.
The magical, emerald-green light of the dawn
lit up the house each morning and on one really beautiful,
sun-smiling day, hubby little Hermes was born there,
with rosy cheeks like peaches, a cute blond curl
on his forehead and two little sparkling eyes.
Hermes was a very important child: his dad was father of all the gods (the famous Zeus), while his mother was Maia,
the most beautiful of all the nymphs.
Among all the children ever born, Hermes was,
without a shadow of doubt, the cleverest and the most naughty.
Indeed, on the very morning of his birth, and as soon as his father
and mother had fallen asleep, he quickly jumped out of the sacred
cradle, crossed the doorway of the star-ceilinged house
and began to search for some rascals to play with.
En ce jour, à cet instant, le potelé Hermès naquit,
avec des joues roses comme des pêches, une belle boucle blonde sur le front et deux petits yeux vifs. Hermès était un enfant très important: son papa était le père de tous les dieux, le célèbre Zeus, et sa mère était Maïa, la plus belle des nymphes.
Entre tous les enfants nés, Hermès était sans l'ombre d'un doute le plus ingénieux et le plus taquin de tous. Le matin où il vint au monde, à l'instant où son père et sa mère s'endormirent, il sauta hors de son berceau sacré et franchit le seuil de la voûte sublime, à la recherche de quelques malheureux à qui jouer des tours.

Là fuori, trovò ad osservarlo una creatura rivolta a terra, a pancia in giù, ricoperta da un guscio marrone, intenta a mangiare, comodamente e lentamente, le pere cadute sul terreno. "Chi sei? E che fai li per terra?”, chiese il piccolo Ermes.

"Sono una tartaruga e sto mangiando queste squisite pere”,

rispose la tartaruga. Ermes nel vederla provò una grande gioia
e i suoi occhi rimasero affascinati dal suo guscio colorato. Immediatamente, nella sua mente, un'idea, un'invenzione, un qualcosa si accese ed esclamò: “Tu che mangi le pere cadute dal sacro Pero devi pagarmi un pegno!” "Ma io non ho niente da darti”, rispose la tartaruga. "Invece si!”, esclamò Ermes sorridendo e si buttò su di lei; con scaltrezza e rapidità le tolse di dosso il suo vestito rugoso, e saltellando e ridendo, Ermes ritornò in casa lasciando la povera tartaruga, rossa dalla vergogna,

senza neppure una foglia per coprirsi.
Outside, he discovered a creature lying on its stomach
and covered with a brown shell. It was watching him
as it slowly and contentedly ate some pears
that had fallen on the ground. ”Who are you?
And what are you doing on the ground?” asked little Hermes.
"I’m a turtle, and I’m eating these delicious pears.”
replied the turtle. Hermes felt a great joy while watching the creature and its colourful shell fascinated him.
Immediately, an idea, an invention, lit up in his mind
and he exclaimed, “You! You who dare to eat the pears
that have fallen from the sacred Pear Tree!
Do you not know that they are mine? You must give me something in return as a token of your appreciation!” ”But I have nothing to give you”, replied the turtle.”Yes you have!” exclaimed Hermes with a smile and he suddenly jumped on top of its back and quickly
removed its wrinkled shell. The poor turtle, red with shame,
was left without even a leaf to cover itself, as Hermes,
skipping and laughing, set out for home.
La-bas, au dehors, il découvrit une créature tournée vers le sol, face vers le bas, couverte d'une coque marron et absorbée à manger les poires tombées sur le sol, paisiblement et lentement. "Qui es-tu? Que fais-tu fais par terre?" lui demanda le petit Hermès. “je suis une tortue et je suis en train de manger ces poires" répondit la tortue. La voyant, il ressentit une joie intense, fasciné par sa coque colorée. Instantanément, une idée germa dans son esprit et s'épanouit, et il s'exclama:
"Toi qui manges les poires tombées du Poirier sacré,
sais tu qu'elle sont miennes??? Tu dois me payer un gage!”
"Mais je n'ai rien à te donner", répondit la tortue.
" Au contraire!", s'exclama Hermès souriant et il se jeta sur elle; avec ruse et rapidité, il lui enleva son vêtement rugueux, et en sautillant et en riant, l'enfant revint chez lui, en laissant la pauvre tortue, rouge de honte, sans même une feuille pour se couvrir.

"Ecco un segno felice e fortunato!
Ti farò diventare un giocattolo unico, come non se ne sono visti mai”, disse Ermes osservando con minuziosa attenzione
il guscio variegato della tartaruga.

Poi, lo appoggiò a terra e infilò nel guscio degli steli di canna della stessa misura e, con accortezza, tese tutt’intorno una pelle di bue.

Fissò con della supercolla e chiodi due corna di cervo perdute,
e le congiunse con un piccolo rametto;
infine tese sette corde in armonia tra loro.

Una strettina all'ultima vite con il suo cacciavite divino e VOILA'!
Il giocattolo era pronto...ma...che cosa aveva inventato?
On the way back, Hermes could not stop admiring the turtle’s
multicoloured shell and said, “Aren’t you a lucky, happy thing!
I’m going to make a special toy out of you,
unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.”
He placed it on the ground and first threaded
some uniformly sized reed stalks through the shell, before then
stretching an ox-skin tightly around it.
Next, with the help of some nails and superglue, he attached two
horns that a deer had lost and joined each of them together
by means of a small branch. Finally, he stretched seven strings
across his invention until they harmonised with each other.
One last twist with his divine screwdriver and VOILA’!
The toy was ready…but…what, exactly, had he invented?
“Voilà un signe heureux et chanceux!” Je ferai de toi un jouet unique, comme tu n'en as jamais vu” dit Hermès en observant avec attention et minutie la coque bigarrée de la tortue. Puis il la jeta au sol et y enfila des tiges de canne de même longueur et, avec attention, tendit tout autour une peau de boeuf. Il fixa, avec clous et supercolle, deux cornes de cerf lièes par un petit rameau; enfin il tendit sept cordes en harmonie entre elles. Un dernier petit coup de son tournevis divin; et VOILA!'
Le jouet était prêt...mais... qu'avait-il inventé?

Lo rigirò più volte tra le mani per capire come potesse far funzionare quello strano oggetto, poi, con una piccola conchiglia grande quanto un'unghia, fece vibrare le corde, una dopo l'altra.

Quel bellissimo giocattolo diede un suono prodigioso,
tanto meraviglioso che al suo suono gli animali
uscivano dalle loro tane incantati.

Il piccolo Ermes ritornò sul verde prato continuando a suonare, cimentandosi anche con il canto,
circondato da tante creature ammaliate.

E mentre cantava la sua mente già sognava altre imprese gloriose tra gli uomini e gli dei. Compiaciuto e orgoglioso del suo meraviglioso strumento, ne fissò un laccio da parte a parte,
e, messo in spalla, partì per le più alte montagne.
He turned it over in his hands several times in order to
understand how he could make that strange object play;
then, with a small seashell as big as a fingernail,
he made the strings vibrate, one after another.
That beautiful toy produced a wonderful music,
music so marvellous that, when it was played,
all the animals left their lairs as if enchanted.
Playing and singing at the same time, little Hermes returned
home to the green field and was soon surrounded by many
spellbound creatures. And as he rejoiced, his mind was already
dreaming up ther glorious deeds in the world of gods and men.
Pleased with himself and proud as punch of his wonderful
instrument, he fixed a strap from one end to the other and
carried it across his shoulders, before then departing
for the highest mountains.
Il le retourna plusieurs fois entre ses mains, pour comprendre comment faire fonctionner l’étrange objet, puis, avec un petit coquillage grand comme un ongle, fit vibrer les cordes, l'une après l'autre. De ce très beau jouet sortì une musique prodigieuse, tellement merveilleuse que lorsqu'il jouait, les animaux sortaient de leurs terriers, enchantés. Le petit Hermès revint sur le pré vert tout en jouant, s'essayant également également au chant, entouré de créatures ensorcelées. Et tandis que son esprit se réjouissait, il rêvait déjà d'autres glorieuses associations entre les hommes et les dieux. Orgueilleux et satisfait de son merveilleux instrument, il fixa de part et d'autre un lacet, et, ainsi mis en bandoulière,
partit pour les plus hautes montagnes.

Il sole brillava alto quando Ermes giunse ai monti ombrosi della Piera, dove le sacre mucche del fratello Apollo avevano le loro stalle, e pascolavano negli amabili prati non toccati dalla falce.

Il piccolo figlio di Zeus rimase a spiare da dietro
una grande parete di roccia: contò cinquanta bovini,
un vecchio toro e un piccolo cane, poi, ebbe un'idea.

Per diversi minuti attese nascosto di veder spuntare Apollo da dietro qualche roccia o fronda, ma con il crescere delle ombre capì che il divino cacciatore doveva essere nei boschi lontani.

Ermes agì velocemente e con astuzia: mise le mucche in fila
grazie al suono del suo strumento e le spinse tutte
lungo il vecchio sentiero sabbioso che portava al mare.

Tutte tranne il vecchio toro e il piccolo cane.

The sun was shining high in the sky when Hermes
came to the shady mountains of Piera, where the sacred cows of
Apollo, his brother, had their stables and grazed in pleasant
meadows that were never mown. The little son of Zeus began to spy on them from behind a great wall of rock: he counted fifty cattle, one old bull and one small dog, before he eventually had an idea. For several minutes he remained hidden in case Apollo might suddenly spring out from behind some rocks or foliage,
but as the shadows lengthened he realised that the divine hunter had to be far away in the distant woods. Cunning little Hermes acted quickly. First chasing away the bull and the dog, he next hypnotised the cows with the sound of his instrument and made them all line up in a single row before he then drove them along the old, sandy path that led to the beach.

Le soleil brillait haut lordsqu'Hermès arriva aux monts ombragés de Piera, où les vaches sacrées de son frère Apollon avaient leurs étables, et où elles paissaient dans de beaux prés non encore touchés par la faux. Le petit fils de Zeus resta à guetter derrière un grand mur de roche: il compta cinquante bovins, un vieux taureau et un petit chien, puis il lui vint une idée. Il patienta caché plusieurs minutes, puis vit surgir Apollon de derrière quelque roche ou rameau, mais les ombres grandissante il comprit que le chasseur divin devait être dans les bois au loin. Hermès agit rapidement, astucieusement. Il mit les vaches en file à l’aide du son de l'instrument, et les conduit le long de l'ancien chemain menant à la plage de sable.

Toutes sauf le vieux taureau et le petit chien.

Il sole scendeva velocemente proprio come Ermes
e il suo gregge dalle montagne.

“Che bello scherzo! Vorrei tanto vedere la faccia di mio fratello quando si accorgerà di non aver più tutte le sue mucche. Svanite! Peccato non avere le ali, o non essere leggeri come una nuvola”,
e mentre rideva tra sé e sé, il piccolo briccone si allontanò sempre più, costeggiando il mare sulla sabbia bagnata,
non dimenticando mai l'arte dell'inganno, cancellando con rami freschi ogni traccia lasciata.
The sun was setting quickly as Hermes and his herd of cows
were descending from the mountain.
“What a great joke! I would like to see my brother’s face
when he realises that he doesn’t have his cows anymore.
All vanished into thin air! What a pity I don’t have wings or that
I’m not as light as a cloud…” and as he laughed to himself, the little rascal moved further and further away along the coastline. While walking upon the wet sand, he noticed that his feet left a trail of footprints. Always alert, and not forgetting the arts of deception, Hermes used some fresh branches to brush away any evidence that he had ever walked along this route. No, indeed; there was never, ever, a child as clever or as naughty as Hermes!
Le soleil se couchait rapidement tout comme Hermès
et son troupeau dans les montagnes.
"Belle blague! Je voudrais voir le visage de mon frère lorsqu'il s'apercevra qu'il n'a plus ses vaches. Disparues! Dommage de ne pas avoir d'ailes, ou de ne pas être légers comme un nuage", et tout en riant seul, le filou s'éloignait de plus en plus, le long de la mer, sur le sable humide, en effaçant
avec des branches fraîches chaque trace laissée.
